How to play On The Square: key, chords and progression

On The Square by Mac DeMarco is built around E major (four sharps: F♯, C♯, G♯, D♯), with 7 chords in all: G#m, D#m, A, E, G, F#4 and F#.

The progression the song keeps returning to is D#m – G#m – D#m – A (vii – iii – vii – IV in E major). In solfa, that is te – mi – te – fah. Learn these 4 changes first and most of the song falls into place.

Good to know: G#m, D#m, F#4 and F# are the tricky part on guitar (barre or movable shapes). Slow the change down until it is clean; on piano and ukulele they are simpler.
