How to play This Flight Tonight: key, chords and progression

This Flight Tonight by Joni Mitchell is centred on G major (one sharp: F♯). The song uses 9 chords: G4, Gm11, Gsus7, G, C, Cadd9, Gmaj7, Am11 and Dsus7.

The progression the song keeps returning to is Gsus7 – G4 – Gsus7 – G (Isus4 – Isus4 – Isus4 – I in G major). In solfa, that is doh – doh – doh – doh. Learn these 4 changes first and most of the song falls into place.

Good to know: Gm11 and Am11 are played as barre or movable shapes on guitar. Practise the change into them slowly; on piano and ukulele the same chords are easier.
