How to play Lay It Down: key, chords and progression

Lay It Down by Allen Stone is in the key of E major (four sharps: F♯, C♯, G♯, D♯). The song uses 13 chords: C#m9, Bsus4, G#m7, F#m7, Aadd9/E, Badd11/F#, E, G#7b13, Am/E, Am6/E, Am7 and D6sus2 and 1 more.

The progression the song keeps returning to is C#m9 – Bsus4 – G#m7 – F#m7 (vi9 – Vsus4 – iii7 – ii7 in E major). In solfa, that is lah – soh – mi – reh. Learn these 4 changes first and most of the song falls into place.

Good to know: C#m9, Bsus4, G#m7, F#m7 and Aadd9/E are played as barre or movable shapes on guitar. Practise the change into them slowly; on piano and ukulele the same chords are easier.
