How to play Boyfriend: key, chords and progression

Boyfriend by Rex Orange County is built around C major (no sharps or flats), with 15 chords in all: F, Bb, C, Bb/D, C/E, Dm7, Ab, Abm, Bm, Dm, Gm and Bbm and 3 more.

The progression the song keeps returning to is Bb – C – F – C/E (♭VII – I – IV – I in C major). Learn these 4 changes first and most of the song falls into place.

Good to know: on guitar, F, Bb, Bb/D, Ab and Abm need a barre or movable shape. Take the change into them slowly at first; piano and ukulele players have it easier.
