150 Chord Progressions for your new Songs

Updated

Ever needed a list of Chord Progressions to help with your Production and Songwriting? This is it.

It’s no news that Musicians, Composers, and Instrumentalists often find it difficult to come up with chord progressions for a new song. It could be the result of them exhausting all the chords in their head or they’ve been playing for a long time and most of their chords are becoming repetitive. Many beginners or intermediate players normally have this problem coming up with ideas, especially music producers.
So we’ve come up with a very long list of progressions that can be used across different genres of music, be it Pop, Afrobeats, Hip Hop, Latin, RnB/Soul music, and more. In order to make it comprehensive, all chords will be on Key C. So you can compose or use a key table to get the exact chord progression on your favorite key. We’ve broken this into two parts, Minor and Major chord progressions.

How to move these progressions to another key

  1. Write the C major scale under the numbers 1–7: C(1) D(2) E(3) F(4) G(5) A(6) B(7).
  2. Turn each chord into its number. For example C–Am–Dm–G7 becomes 1 – 6m – 2m – 5(7).
  3. Write your new key’s scale and read the numbers back. In G: G(1) A(2) B(3) C(4) D(5) E(6) F♯(7), so 1 – 6m – 2m – 5(7) becomes G–Em–Am–D7.

Chords outside the scale (like Fm or A♭7 in C) move by the same distance: Fm in C becomes Cm in G.

Which progressions to try first

  • For pop and Afrobeats: C–G–Am–F and Am–F–C–G loops.
  • For gospel: C–C7–F–Fm–C and C–Am–Dm–G7.
  • For R&B and neo-soul: Fm–G7–Em7–Am7 and Dm7–G7–Cmaj7 with added 9ths.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a chord progression for a new song?

Decide the mood first: major loops sound bright, minor loops darker. Then pick a short loop and write the melody over it; you can add passing chords later.

Can I use the same progression as another song?

Yes. Common chord progressions are shared by thousands of songs and aren’t owned by anyone. Your melody and lyrics are what make a song yours.

Why are all these progressions in C?

C has no sharps or flats, so the pattern is easy to see. Transpose them to any key with the steps above.
