How to play Washing Machine Heart: key, chords and progression

Washing Machine Heart by Mitski is centred on D major (two sharps: F♯, C♯). The song uses 11 chords: C#, A, D, F, F#, C, A#, E, Bm, B and G.

The backbone of the song is C# – A – D – A (VII – V – I – V in D major). In solfa, that is te – soh – doh – soh. Practise these 4 changes until they feel natural and you can play most of it.

Good to know: on guitar, C#, F, F#, A# and Bm need a barre or movable shape. Take the change into them slowly at first; piano and ukulele players have it easier.
