How to play Star: key, chords and progression

These are Star chords by Mitski on Piano, Ukulele, Guitar, and Keyboard.

Star by Mitski sits in D major (two sharps: F♯, C♯), and you need 8 chords to play it: D, E, F#m, G, A, Bm, Gm and Em.

The backbone of the song is D – E – F#m – G (I – II – iii – IV in D major). In solfa, that is doh – reh – mi – fah. Practise these 4 changes until they feel natural and you can play most of it.

Good to know: F#m, Bm and Gm are the tricky part on guitar (barre or movable shapes). Slow the change down until it is clean; on piano and ukulele they are simpler.
