[Verse 1]
Dm F
I had a friend I knew in the ninth grade
Am
And he didn’t come to class one day
Dm F
‘Cause they found something inside his brain
Am
so they sent him home
Dm F
So I went to see him after school
Am
I said “Is there something I can do that
Dm
Might make you feel more comfortable?”
Am
And he told me “No”

[Pre-Chorus]
Dm F
He said “I’m happy that you made it,
Am
please don’t treat me like your patient
Dm F Am
I don’t need more medication,” mmm

[Verse 2]
Dm F
And I won’t forget the things he said
Am
Every time I start to feel depressed
Dm F Am
To be grateful that I still have breath down inside my lungs
Dm F
‘Cause without the darkness there’s no light
Am
And without the pain there’d be no life so
Dm F Am
Even when it hurts inside I won’t try to run

[Pre-Chorus]
Dm F
I’ll be happy that I made it,
Am
I’ll be open, I’ll embrace it
Dm F Am
I won’t take no medication, mmm

[Chorus]
Dm F Am G
The only way I know that I’m alive is ’cause it hurts
Dm F Am G
So anything that takes away my pain will make it worse
Dm F Am G
‘Cause if I’m numb I might as well be underneath the dirt
Dm F Am
The only way I know that I’m alive,
G Dm F Am
that I’m alive is ’cause it hurts
Dm F Am G
Is ’cause it hurts
Dm F Am
The only way I know that I’m alive is ’cause it hurts
